A Proud Family Heritage
The story of Thirsk Decorating Centre began in 1965 in Sowerby, originally specialising in manufacturing wood finishing products for craftsmen worldwide. Since 1980, the business has been owned and operated by the Etherington family, who have overseen its growth from a niche manufacturer into one of the region’s leading decorating specialists. This family-led approach ensures that decades of industry knowledge and a personal commitment to quality remain at the heart of everything we do.
Evolution at the Old Sorting Office
While our roots are in traditional wood finishing, our business has continually evolved to meet the needs of modern decorators and homeowners. Our move to the spacious Old Sorting Office on Newsham Road marked a significant chapter in our history, allowing us to expand our offering and create a dedicated showroom. From introducing Farrow & Ball in 2007 to becoming a key stockist for the industry’s most prestigious names, we have combined our historical expertise with the very best in contemporary design and technology.

Not every surface is straightforward, which is why we stock a range of specialist paints designed to tackle specific challenges. This includes Zinsser primers for high-adhesion and stain-blocking, Bradite One Can for multi-surface applications, and anti-condensation or fire-retardant coatings for commercial compliance.
